Old Eagles, Whitchurch (Eagles)

Although unpretentious externally, this Grade II listed building is of significant local historical interest. English Heritage describe it as "a rare example of a medieval town house, particularly notable for its unusual [base-cruck] framed construction." It is widely considered to be the oldest building in Whitchurch, not obvious though, thanks to it's Victorian exterior. Built during the 14th century it only became a pub in 1868, and at that time was very much a coaching inn. Although notionally one room, there are two areas available. One is a games room, the other a public bar. There are open fires, the floors are tiled and the ceilings low-beamed with evidence of those old timbers. A well supported pub with a loyal clientele and a former Good Beer Guide regular between 1976 and 1986.
