The Woodman’s Stroke, aka "The Woodies" is a quintessentially English village pub, with its thatched roof and traditional interior of exposed ceiling joists and stone floors. It has a chocolate-box frontage and an extensive attractive outside area to the side and back with heated parasols and sofa type seating. It has a petanque piste and large garden, rolling down to Rothley Brook. Family run as a free-house for many years it has a large display of sports memorabilia and three regular real ales with one rapidly changing guest, a fine selection of wines, and good home-cooked food on weekday lunchtimes. The old-fashioned pastime of conversation is encouraged. Dogs aren't allowed inside during the day, when food is bring served.

Historic Interest

Situated within Rothley Conservation area, the pub dates from 1714. When the Hickling family were licensees in the early 1900s the pub doubled as the local undertakers. The coffins were made at the back of the building and the front room was used as the Chapel of Rest. An old photo displayed inside shows that the pub was formerly owned by Offiler's Brewery of Derby, which was taken over by Charringtons in 1965 and closed in 1966.
