Single bar serving a large multi-area room. A small theatre upstairs was used to host occasional live performances until a few years ago.

Renamed to the West Gate by Greene King in 2021.

Historic Interest

The building dates from the 17th century. Also listed at 64 Guildhall St. A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Mar 1820 states that : Sunday last died, Mrs Steggles. Wife of Mr Steggles, of the Black Boy Inn, Bury. A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on 11 Oct in 1837 states that : Wanted, as Servant, a Middle-aged Woman, with a good character, to manage a house, the family in which consists of 3. Apply to Mr HOLDEN, at the Black Boy, BSE A report in the Essex Standard** on Mar-23 in 1877 when John Pizzey was the landlord reports that : "John Pizzey was found guilty of receiving stolen malt to the value of £3 10s the property of Messers Greene & Son.
