Large family-operated free house beside the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, near to Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. The building started as a smallholding in the 1700s, but in the early 1800s when the canal was being dug by hand by retired Irish navvy soldiers it attained a licence, remaining as a beer and cider house until the 1950s when it became fully licensed. The Shepherd's Patch refers to the high ground on which sheep used to be kept in times of flood. Four well-kept permanent ales, some from local breweries, complement the ciders and perries. It is popular for bar meals and there's a separate restaurant area. Booking is recommended to be sure of getting a table. There is also a skittle alley which can be used if there isn't a league match or tables set out along it. Opening and closing times vary, particularly during quiet or busy periods. Accommodation includes a family room and a modern a lodge alongside. The camp site at the rear is open all year and is accessed through the car park. Winner of local CAMRA awards for seven consecutive years.
