Imposing corner pub rebuilt in 1862, popular with tourists and civil servants, and probably named for the Duke of Clarence who was briefly Lord High Admiral in the late 1820s and oversaw naval affairs from an office opposite. As King William IV history now remembers him for his numerous illegitimate offspring, his salty naval language, and for having a head shaped like a pineapple!

The pub is close to Trafalgar Square and Horse Guards Parade, the Admiralty, the Banqueting House, and other government buildings. Following acquisition by Geronimo in 2009 the pub was extensively refurbished but keeping a part-timbered interior and its arched stucco frontage with Corinthian columns. Refurbished again in 2023. There is an elegantly decorated Tin Belly Dining Room upstairs with views down Whitehall to Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament. Note steep stairs to WC.
