Characterful free house, an inn since the 17th century, which once provided for travellers at the city's east tollgate. Four handpumps offer changing ales and often real ciders from across the country. Beer and cider festivals are held, sometimes in association with a live music event. A small partially covered garden offers a pleasant area to sit out, particularly during the summer. The pub is renowned for live music every Friday and Saturday, and frequently on Thursday too.
