Three Tuns Inn, Bishop's Castle (Tuns)

The Three Tuns has a special place in pub history as it is one of only four pubs in the country where brewing was taking place on-site in the 70's and continues to do so. The brewery itself is a historic tower plant which used to be in the same ownership as the pub and dates back to the 1640's. The brewery became a separate enterprise in 2003. There has been a process of updating the pub over the years, but it has been done sympathetically as befitting a Listed building, and it undoubtedly still has that special feel about it. There are four rooms, each serving a different purpose, and each with its own ambience. The little front bar has a traditional air, the main bar has windows facing the brewery, thus making it a much lighter room. The Snug Bar has a low ceiling, wood burning stove, easy chairs and a range of games . And finally a more recent addition is the Conservatory Bar and Dining Room. Up until Summer 2023 the pub just sold Three Tuns beers with one aoccasional guest. However there is now only one Three Tuns beer out of the five cask beers on offer.

It was one of fifteen pubs in the Branch area appearing in the first edition of the Good Beer Guide in 1974. And here's what it said! "Very highly recommended. A friendly pub. well worth a visit. A mecca for connoisseurs of real beer." So, it could well be that this comment is still true after 40 years or so!
