The Red Lion's foundations are from 1777 when it was the Axe & Saw. The present Basil Oliver designed building dates from 1936. A grand, lavishly-thatched building whose interior has been completely remodelled in attractive if anonymous fashion - very much the superior managed house look. It sports the customary "period" mix of part-tiled part-carpeted and part bare-boarded floors, painted wainscotting, random panelling, sturdy wooden bar counter and discrete colour scheme. Large restaurant area at the back, and private dining room. Food menu is gastropub style, with locally sourced/seasonal ingredients where available. The garden has several distinct areas including a patio, decking and a grassed area. Functions and conferences catered for.

Although part of Greene King's Metropolitan wing it also offers well kept ales from regional breweries.
