After being run by the same family for 24 years Phil & Lyn have moved on. The pub is under new management and details will be updated in due course.

Historic Interest

This pub now hosts part of what is believed to be the longest-standing custom in England, the collection of Wroth Silver. This is a very ancient ceremony, first recorded in 1170, and takes place each year on Martinmas Eve (normally Nov 11) just before dawn at Knightlow Cross in Ryton on Dunsmore. Representatives of 25 villages in the area pay nominal dues to the Lord of the Manor and then retire to the pub for breakfast. The pub opens its doors at 6.00am and provides a traditional glass of hot milk and rum and after a hearty breakfast there are speeches. The Duke of Buccleuch as the Lord of the Hundred of Knightlow, and the monarch, are toasted and clay pipes and tobacco are provided (though can no longer smoked indoors).
