Suffered a fire on 5th October 2023 but reopened 21st December. The bar and live music are running, but no kitchen and food until the new year.

Hours shown are Summer 2023 hours. May be shorter in winter.

Busy pub located near to Southampton's ferry terminals. African art, including musical instruments and spectacular batik panels, as well as 'tented' ceiling (fabric covering the ceiling in pleated sheets) create an exotic atmosphere; Part of the old city walls are exposed (behind a glass panel) in a corner of the bar. Two rooms, the main bar area and through an arch a restaurant area. Freshly prepared food is served and now includes a range of stone baked pizzas along with the old favourites & specials. Live music is a very regular feature and can consequently make weekends very, very busy.

Historic Interest

The pub's name refers to an Napoleonic era gun platform that was nearby, not a railway station platform. Part of the ancient city walls is visible behind a glass panel in the bar. The plaque outside commemorates James McGrady, a 1st Class Steward on the Titanic - his was the last body to be recovered from the sea, six weeks after the disaster; James had given his address as The Platform Tavern. The pub had a bit part in the James Cameron film 'Titanic'.
