Next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, this stone pub was built in 1806 to slake the thirst of navvies cutting the Standedge Tunnel. It comprises an open-plan bar and an L-shaped interior, and is popular with walkers, canal boaters and families. A family business, it has a justified reputation for superb freshly-prepared meals and an extensive menu. Booking online is recommended. The colourful Saddleworth Rushcart festival in August always stops here.
