The property known as the Half-Crown, one of three pubs in the South Benfleet conservation area, was built in the late 17th Century, being originally a customs house to control smuggling on the nearby river. It is a successful local pub and offers24 real ales and 1 cider with food available to 8pm with Sunday Roast served.

Historic Interest

It became a pub in 1868 and remained whole for the next 100 years until a fateful day in 1969, when it was shaken to its roots. A jack-knifed lorry careered down St Mary’s Hill, crashed through the front of the pub, demolishing a large section of the saloon and two front doors. After the dust settled the frontage remained supported by the imbedded lorry, fortunately no one was injured. After repairs, to commemorate a new start and the fact no one was injured it was decided to rename the pub the Half-Crown.
