Multiple award winning free house close to the famous Mersey ferries, rescued after closure and refurbished in 2010 as a unique pub with barber's shop. The barber's shop business closed in 2016 creating more room for pub customers. The outside area at the rear of the pub has a retractable roof. The pub is decorated with a fascinating range of military memorabilia and a collection of shipping images. The mural on the side wall of the pub was completed in February 2020 and commemorates the sinking of HMS Birkenhead and the Birkenhead Drill, 'women and children first.'

Live music every Sunday from 6.30pm.

Historic Interest

Built around 1826 it was possibly trading as the Prince of Denmark into the 1850s - it was listed in Bagshaw’s Directory of 1850. Changed name to the Hamlet by 1860. A Yates' Castle Brewery pub from 1898, later John Smith's. Change of name to the Chester Arms in the 1980s before being acquired, renovated and renamed the Dispensary by Cains Brewery in the 1990s. Sold and renamed Gallaghers Pub & Barbers Shop in 2010. A further change of name to Gallaghers Traditional Pub followed. The old photo shows the Hamlet in about 1907 in the centre of the picture with the Kossuth Hotel next door on the right.
