Set in a remote location in a secluded valley just outside Berry Hill, the Dog & Muffler is a remarkable survivor. Originally a simple beer and cider house called the New Inn, and then the Britannia, the pub has been much enlarged over the years. The modern frontage gives little clue as to what is inside. The interior has an abundance of wooden beams bedecked with hop vines and a array of pretty white fairy lights which create an intimate and cosy atmosphere. Although the business is very much orientated towards food, there is is a separate drinking area and three real ales are usually on offer, including a Locale.

A stuffed head of a Tibetan Mastiff dog wearing a muffler is a unique feature and stands proudly above the fire breast in the bar. It is believed to have once belonged to a doctor in Lydbrook.

In summer the outdoor garden is a great place to relax whilst enjoying the views of the surrounding countryside. The cider press is thought to have been once used for making cider on the premises. The famous viewpoint of Yat Rock above Symonds Yat is nearby, making the Dog & Muffler the ideal stop for refreshment after a leisurely ramble.
