Operator: Shepherd Neame
2 Old Compton Street, Soho, London, W1D 4TQ (View on Google Map)

Situated on a prime site on the corner of Charing Cross Rd and Old Compton St, this purports to be the oldest pub in W1, dating from 1734 and Grade II-listed. Previously Molly Moggs, the site reopened after refurbishment in autumn 2017 as the Compton Cross and then again in 2019 as the Coach & Horses under Shepherd Neame ownership. This is now the third pub in Soho with that name!

Very small inside, about square with a front-facing bar. Black honeycomb-pattern ceiling, sunken spot lights, black cornice and upper walls, wood panelling clads some walls with brewery mirrors, dark green glazed tiles on the dado, white glazed tiles behind bar, black-painted buttressed wood panelling under counter, bare floorboards, the only seating is high stools & tables, elbow shelf around the room. Quite loud music. Easily filled but not always busy, gay-friendly, female-friendly. Karaoke every Sunday from 4pm.

Historic Interest

Grade II listed, Historic England reference 1247739. Corner site with Charing Cross Road. House, now public house with accommodation above. Late C17/early C18 with later alterations. Rendered brick, tiled mansard roof. 3 1/2 storeys. Ground floor: 3 bays, with entrance to Charing Cross Road and pair of small paned sashes. Old Compton Street elevation has pair of small paned sashes and blank recessed panel. Upper floors: 2 bays to Old Compton Street, one to Charing Cross Road. First floor recessed sashes, upper floor casements beneath fixed light, rendered Cills. Window forms suggest early, tall proportions retained. Single full dormer to each front. Party wall stacks. Interior: Above ground floor retains original plan form. Open-well staircase with moulded closed string, some original turned balusters, moulded rail, newels comprising column with square base and knob, finials removed. Plain panelling with deeply moulded box cornicing. Rare survival of early house representing the earliest phase of Soho's development (q.v.) Nos 4, 5, 6 Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road.
