Sally Port Inn, Portsmouth

Grade II listed, according to the pub's website it is frame built from oaken timbers of the period as well as more modern timbers from 19th century wooden-wall ships. The building surrounds a cantilever staircase, the backbone of the stairwell being a ship's top spar about 40' long. This can be seen in various floors and is rumoured to come from a 1798 frigate 'Penelope'. In 1956 the pub briefly hit the headlines following the disappearance of Cdr. Lionel 'Buster' Crabb RN who was staying at the hotel. The security classification of the documents has been extended until 2057 but it follows the visit of Soviet leaders Marshal Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev onboard a Russian cruiser which the Admiralty was very interested in. This was also the inspiration for part of Ian Fleming's James Bond novel 'Thunderball'. For more details, see the pub's website.
