The King Alfred is a grand building hidden away in residential Winchester and surrounded by streets of terraced houses, yet less than a 10 minute walk from the station. The windows are ornately etched and surrounded by many hanging baskets and troughs filled with colourful flowers. The deceptively large multi-roomed interior is high quality, with a mixture of wooden and leather seating and an eclectic array of ornaments. Food endeavours to be locally sourced and includes pub classics. For those dining there is table service for food and drinks (10% discretionary service charge is added) though casual drinkers are welcome as well. Outside is a large garden with a children's climbing frame and a marquee with its own bar for busy times. Accommodation is offered in five rooms.

Operated by the Little Pub Group, which has three pubs in Winchester, one in Sparsholt, and one in Frogham (NW New Forest).

Historic Interest

Built 1897/1898 at a cost of £1220 plus £550 for the land, and completed on time by February 1898. The first landord, James Whitlock, got his licence in March 1898. This history, along with a full list of the licensees since then, is displayed, somewhat hidden away, towards the back of the pub.
