This Pub is Closed Long Term

Large brick building on the main street with colourful hanging baskets in summer. Inside there is a long narrow room with banquettes and dart board, a carpeted lounge, and a snug with tiled floor and traditional fireplace. Low ceilings and wooden beams are features. Loyalty card on cask beers available.

Historic Interest

Built in 1858, the name comes from the 'Wise Fools of Gotham' who built a fence around the tree where the cuckoo's nest was, to stop the cuckoo flying away! (Do cuckoos have nests?!?).

Recorded in 1876 as a public house under publican Joseph Talbot (Post Office Directory).

Asset of Community Value registered 11th January 2016 (RBC ACV 014) and nominated by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA (Ref. ACV 012). This expired on the 10th January 2021.

As at November 2017, the freehold for the Cuckoo Bush (NT336494) was held by Punch Partnerships (PTL) Limited [Reg. No. 3512363]. It was transferred to Star (Heineken) on the 5th March 2018.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

An 1858 building with an unusual layout. The main entrance leads to a drinkers' lobby, then a smoke room on the left - the modern fittings here suggest it is a recent addition. On the right is a wonderful, largely unaltered bar with old narrow benches, old counter (but new top and bar back), wood surround fireplace and cast-iron tables. A narrow passage takes you to a large rear lounge which is an amalgamation of two small rooms. The counter is genuinely old but not so the other fittings.

General information about historic pub interiors

Built 1858 to an unusual layout it retains much original structure. Main entrance leads to a drinkers' lobby with smoke room on the left which has modern fittings, so may be a later addition. On the right you find a wonderful unaltered bar with old narrow benches. It retains an old counter with new top, new bar back, original fixed seating, brick and wood surround fireplace which could be 1930s but is painted over, complete with three good old cast iron tables, two with marble tops. A narrow passage leads to a large modernised rear lounge which was two small rooms. This retains an original counter, but new top and bar back, and a 1950s fireplace in the rear section.
