Restaurant with a cocktail lounge and bar.

Has been an inn from circa 1300 and known as the Mitre from circa 1500. The property of Lincoln College since 1450. The name comes from the coat of arms of the see of Lincoln. Can reasonably claim to be Oxford’s oldest pub although the south front was rebuilt circa 1630. The Mitre served as a coaching inn for many years and was very fashionable; the upper floors became student accommodation and the interior was modernised in 1968 when it became a Berni Inn (Grand Metroplolitan) and in 1990 a Beefeater Restaurant (Whitbread). It still retains some C17 and C18 features and C13 cellars. Closed June 2019 and the future was uncertain but has reopened as a 'Gusto' Italian Restaurant December 2022. There is a cocktail lounge and bar with some beer on tap.

The separate stables were converted into a bar - the Turl Bar in 1926 which closed in 2005 and converted for student use.

Historic Interest

Grade II* Three and four storeyed stuccoed, partly rubble and partly brick and timber framing, with C13 and C17 cellars. The south front was rebuilt circa 1630 and altered in C18.
