Cask Ale

Large single roomed pub, with a predominantly local clientele. Most sporting events are shown on large screen TV and there even one on the patio, so you don't miss anything. Pub games are also important here with a pool table and dart board. The pub is furnished in a modern style, with a number of arty pictures. There is a larger dining room/function room and the Miners Lodge adjacent, providing good value accommodation. The pub also hosts the Mytchett Tandoori Take Away whose meals can be eaten in the pub. Real ale may not always be available.

Historic Interest

Used to cater for the military and labouring classes and had stabling facilities for four horses The origin of the pub's name is uncertain, but it is certainly unusual in an area with no mining connections. One suggestion is that it may well have some connections with a secret tunnel which was dug from Farnborough Hill around 1840s, the home of the Empress Euginie, the widow of Napoleon III. It was recorded as an empty cottage, owned by a Mr Thomas Wooldrige in 1842 and may have had connections with the miners at that time. A more likely suggestion would be that the name was derived from the property 'Minehurst Farm', which was situate nearby in Hammesmoor Road, and was recorded owned by a William Hall. In 1873 it was owned by a Mr Potten from Farnham and a few years later by a Mr Thomas Matthews. The first recorded licencee was a Mr James Butcher previously in 1870. On New Years Day 1890 a Richard Elkins obtained a mortgage on the premises and then it was reconveyed in May 2004 by reginald White and Charles Bone. Mr F Crooke of Guildford then sold it to a Timothy William Bridge, who on 1st January 1930 sold it to Hodgson's Kingston Brewery. In April 1937 the tenancy was sold by George Pain to Allan Hann for the sum of ÂŁ87 13s 9d. In 1944 the tenancy went to Mr Frederick Gibbens for a sum of ÂŁ565,16s 3d which include ÂŁ100 of goodwill.
